Bishop Barber and Leaders Oppose New Ballot Attacks With Voter Mobilization

Bishop Barber announces more than 320 marches to the polls already scheduled to oppose voter suppression as Trump announces upcoming trip to North Carolina

RALEIGH, NC — September 14, 2026 — When national religious, moral and civil rights leader and Repairers of the Breach President Bishop William J. Barber II called out the Trump administration’s most recent attacks on mail-in ballots at a news conference Monday morning, it wasn’t his first time fighting voter suppression in the state or across the nation.

In fact, Bishop Barber was a critical part of the 2007 movement that saw a historic expansion of voting rights, including the implementation of same-day voter registration. Furthermore, Bishop Barber led the successful opposition to then-Governor Pat McCrory’s attempt to roll back those gains and more in what Bishop Barber called "the most vulgar attempt at voter suppression we have seen in decades"

"Every time we win, they come back with another scheme," Barber said on Monday, joined by a diverse coalition of faith leaders and activists. "Now we’re angry, but it’s a righteous anger."

Earlier this month, the Trump administration launched its latest scheme, asking the Supreme Court to approve his executive order restricting mail voting ahead of the midterm elections and directing the postal service to refuse to deliver mail ballots to certain voters. Republican chief election officials from seven states filed a brief to the Supreme Court on Wednesday opposing the administration’s request, saying that it is too late for the Trump order to be implemented before the midterm election, explaining that ballots have already been sent out in North Carolina and other early states.

"They want to rig the courts. They want to rig the Board of Elections. They want to steal democracy. They can’t sell their policies to the people, so they want to cheat. That’s why, since August 3, more than 320 groups across the country are working with us to organize marches to the polls on the first day of early voting and beyond," Barber said, pointing to the continued success of his Love Forward Together voter mobilization initiative.

In addition to its work to organize 1,000 marches to the polls for the first day of early voting and beyond across the nation, Love Forward Together aims to mobilize 5 million low-wage voters and at least 1 million Black men, particularly in the South and battleground states.

"It’s time to have conspicuous courage and conspicuous outrage and show it at the polls because that’s where the battle is going to go down," said Bishop Barber. "It’s nonviolent and nonpartisan, but the battle for the ballot is on like never before."
