The Biblical story of Daniel aims to reach faith-based audiences in movie theaters with the recent release of Daniel and the Fiery Furnace, according to the film’s producers and stars.
Based on the Old Testament’s book of Daniel, the movie chronicles the Israelites' experiences during their exile in Babylon and details the prophet Daniel's ascension under King Nebuchadnezzar. The film also focuses on the famous tale of his companions, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who stood firm in their devotion to God and walked away unharmed from a blazing furnace after declining to worship the King's golden image.
The film’s co-producer, Daniel Kooman, believes its themes extend far beyond its Biblical teachings. “Daniel and the Fiery Furnace is a powerful and timeless biblical story about faith, courage, conviction, and entering into the fiery trials that we have in our lives,” he said. “It’s a timeless story for audiences.”
To adapt the story for the big screen, Daniel Kooman and his brother and co-producer, Matthew, said they had to strike a delicate balance between creating a traditional cinematic film and respecting the biblical text.
“The challenge is whether we can accurately depict scripture on screen and stand behind the accuracy of the storytelling itself,” Daniel Kooman said.
Matthew Kooman said the cast and crew experienced God's presence several times while filming in northern India. During a scene in which Daniel interprets King Nebuchadnezzar’s troubling dream, Matthew Kooman said an unexpected thunderstorm hit the film’s location.
“We experienced the full presence of God,” he said. “Everybody was blown away by this change of the atmosphere. It was a centerpiece of experiencing God moving through story for the purpose of this movie.”
Actor Mena Massoud, who plays Daniel in the film, said prayer played a significant role in bringing the cast and crew together each day. “The set was a special place because we really led every day with faith and prayer,” he said. “The Kooman brothers did an amazing job gathering everybody during particular times of the day and leading the experience with prayer.”
Massoud expressed confidence that the movie’s message will strike a chord with true believers. “I think it’s a film that will resonate with everybody of faith,” he noted. “As life gets more difficult and challenging, you can look to your faith as a pillar of strength.”
The film also challenges viewers to recognize their own internal courage, according to actor Elijah Alexander, who depicts King Nebuchadnezzar.
“This is a film that encourages each of us to become heroes of our own stories and look inside instead of outside for the answers,” he said.
