Ministry and Mental Health: Dr. Powell II Hosts Inaugural Community Mental Wellness Mixer at Arizona State University as Founder of Mentally Anonymous

Posted

On May 31, 2024, Reverend Doctor Staccato K. Powell II, in collaboration with three prominent Black-led advocacy organizations, hosted a transformative Community Mental Wellness Mixer at the Mercado, situated within the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation offices building at Arizona State University. The event brought together diverse community members, mental health professionals, and leaders dedicated to advancing mental wellness resources and mental health advocacy.

The inaugural Community Mental Wellness Mixer was a joint effort with the Arizona State Chapter of the NAACP, the National Coalition of 100 Black Women: Phoenix Metropolitan Chapter, and the 100 Black Men of Phoenix. This partnership aimed to address the pressing issue of mental health within marginalized communities, with a specific focus on the unique challenges faced by the African American community.

"This event was a pivotal moment in our community's journey towards mental wellness," said Rev. Dr. Staccato K. Powell II. "It stressed our collective commitment to breaking down barriers and providing essential support for mental health, particularly within underserved communities. My passion for mental health reform within church communities was fostered throughout my doctoral studies. I did my dissertation educating the church on new ways to think about mental health and coupled with my personal mental health journey, I knew that God called me for such a time as this. The Mental Health Crisis in our church post-pandemic just amplified the need for Mental Health reform in churches. My prayer is to expand my ministry in mental health and expand upon the current housing project in Arizona behind Fisher, where we house a community that deals with mental health and drug-related issues.

A highlight of the afternoon was Dr. Sharon Jaycox, the state NAACP Health chair, reading the resolution on mental health and wellness in Arizona's Black communities. This resolution emphasized the need for comprehensive mental health initiatives to address disparities and promote holistic well-being. Attendees engaged in enriching discussions, networking opportunities, and interactive sessions led by mental health professionals and advocates. The mixer provided a platform for participants to access resources, share personal experiences, and foster a supportive community environment.

In addition to his community leadership and advocacy for mental wellness, Rev. Dr. Powell recently made history as the youngest candidate running for Bishop in the A.M.E. Zion Church, having just turned 40. He is supported in his endeavors by his wife, Joysaphine Waitman-Powell, a civic nonprofit Director and community leader, and their children, Staccato Powell III and Saint Powell. Dr. Powell's platform of faith, mental health reform, and social justice resonates deeply within the community," remarked George Preston Birchy, Director of Advocacy & Civic Engagement of Mentally Anonymous. "His leadership is pivotal in addressing systemic issues and advocating for positive change."

"I proudly support my husband, Rev. Dr. Staccato K. Powell II, in his candidacy for Bishop in the A.M.E. Zion Church says Joysaphine Waitman-Powell, wife of Dr. Powell II and Director of Strategic Initiatives of Mentally Anonymous. Our marriage and ministry are grounded in faith and a shared commitment to advancing mental health reform and social justice initiatives.

Joysaphine, serving as the first African American appointed Commissioner for the city of Peoria in her second term and as a full-time Director of Civic Engagement & Special Projects at a local nonprofit, has also demonstrated remarkable leadership in the State of Arizona. With the strength of God guiding us, we have worked tirelessly to make a meaningful impact across our state. My husband's candidacy for Bishop reflects his deep-seated dedication to serving others and fostering positive change in our community and church. Additionally, as a community advocate, I am honored to represent myself and our community at the Democratic National Convention this August in Chicago as a duly elected delegate for Congressional District 8 of Arizona. Through my roles as a mother, wife, and community leader, I am committed to living out God's calling and advocating for those in need. Together, with God's guidance, my husband and I remain steadfast in our mission to promote mental health reform and social justice, ensuring a brighter future for all.
