Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia Thompson Delivers Stirring Commencement Address, “What Now?”

Posted

A spirit of reverence and reflection filled the room as graduates and guests gathered to hear the powerful words of Karen Georgia Thompson, General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ, who delivered the commencement address titled “What Now?”

Dr. Thompson stands as a historic and prophetic figure in the life of the church. In 2023, she became the first woman and the first woman of African descent to serve as General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ, one of the major mainline Protestant denominations in the United States. A Jamaican-born immigrant, theologian, and global church leader, she brings decades of experience in ecumenical ministry, racial justice advocacy, and interfaith engagement.

Her historic leadership and profound theological voice made her presence at commencement both fitting and momentous.

In her address, “What Now?”, Dr. Thompson spoke directly to the social, political, and spiritual tensions shaping our current moment. With clarity and pastoral urgency, she challenged graduates to consider how faith leaders must respond in a world where truth is often contested.

She offered a careful distinction between misinformation and disinformation, explaining that misinformation spreads falsehood unintentionally, while disinformation deliberately distorts truth in order to manipulate public understanding. These forces, she noted, fracture communities, undermine trust, and erode the moral fabric necessary for democratic and spiritual life.
Yet her address was not merely diagnostic. It was deeply pastoral and prophetic.

Dr. Thompson called attention to the painful reality that human beings often fail to care for one another as we should, both as members of the human family and as followers of Christ. In a world marked by division, she reminded the graduates that the Christian vocation is one of courage, compassion, and truth-telling.

Throughout the address, the audience was captivated not only by the content of her message but also by the artistry of its delivery. With the gentle lilt of the Caribbean islands in her voice, Dr. Thompson wove together scripture and original poetry, creating a tapestry of language that stirred both mind and spirit. Each movement of the speech flowed seamlessly between sacred text and poetic reflection, giving the message both intellectual depth and lyrical beauty.

The effect was profound. Her words carried the gravity of scholarship, the urgency of prophetic witness, and the cadence of a poet who understands the power of language to awaken the soul.

By the close of the address, graduates had received more than a speech. They had been given a charge. Dr. Thompson called them to step into a world that increasingly struggles to speak truth to power and to embody a faith that refuses to be silent in the face of injustice.

For those gathered, the moment felt both historic and holy.

The clarity of her insight, the elegance of her language, and the moral conviction of her message created a powerful launching point for the graduates as they begin the next chapter of their calling.
Indeed, the speech, delivered with remarkable verbal acuity and poetic alacrity, will no doubt live in the memories of the graduates and all who bore witness to that momentous day.
