ROCK HILL, SC — On Saturday, June 20, 2026, Foundation A.M.E. Zion Church resonated with the eloquent voices of the future as the Rock Hill District Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society (WH&OMS) hosted its third annual Sitrena S. Berry Oratorical Contest since its re-establishment. This cornerstone event for youth in grades 9-12 celebrated the resurrection of a cherished tradition and the enduring impact of a beloved leader.
The late Mrs. Sitrena S. Berry, who served with distinction as a past Rock Hill District YAMS Coordinator, was remembered as a driving force for youth leadership. She established the oratorical contest as a tool to engage youngsters, sharpen their public speaking skills, and inspire them to lead. Her family continues to sponsor the esteemed first-place prize each year, ensuring her legacy remains central.
The theme, “The Impact of Leadership and Legacy,” was uniquely suited. The District WH&OMS resurrected the event, recognizing that young people need an inspiring platform to let their perspectives be heard, reflecting on how past examples shape the future.
This year’s orations were judged by three independent individuals who rated participants on areas including content, delivery, poise, and interpretation.
“The late Mrs. Sitrena S. Berry left an indelible mark on this district,” said Mrs. Angela Joseph, District Mission Education Director. “To see this contest, her brainchild, restored to its vibrancy and continuing her work was profoundly moving. We aren't just teaching them to speak; we are teaching them to lead.”
“I was completely awestruck by the wisdom and delivery,” added Mrs. Sasha G. Lee, District Youth Missionary Secretary. “It is inspiring to see our youth embracing this platform. We must continue to nurture this generation so they are equipped to be the leaders we know they can be.”
Mrs. Chantay Bouler, District President of the WH&OMS, concluded, “Resurrecting this contest was a labor of love, an investment in our future. Mrs. Berry believed that every child has a unique voice that needs to be heard. We reaffirm our commitment to her legacy and to providing our youth with tools for lasting impact.”
